Veterans throughout the United States have been lobbying state legislatures and cities to establish a separate day in honor of Vietnam Veterans. The advocates are not seeking a national holiday that gives federal workers a day off, but rather a special day set apart as a symbol of gratitude and respect for their service. In September, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation making March 30 Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. The date of March 30 is the date that many advocates say the last U.S. troops left Vietnam in 1973.
