VA Housed Veterans in 2022, over 40,000
The Department of Veteran Affairs made a goal in 2022 to house 38,000 homeless Veterans. They surpassed this goal by housing 40,401 homeless Veterans that deserve a roof over their heads. Since 2020 the total number of nationally homeless Veterans decreased by 11% and the total number of homeless Veterans has declined by 55% since 2010. VA has managed this remarkable decrease in homeless Veterans by increasing outreach to the Veteran population that are experiencing homelessness.
The Housing First Program
This program works by getting the Veteran off the street and into a home. Once the Veteran is housed, then VA will assist them with health care and other support to improve their quality of life. The program is being implemented through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)- VA Supportive Housing (VASH) program. The program allows Veterans to obtain vouchers to rent privately owned housing and then they will get additional support from VA. This support includes:
- Health care
- Mental health treatment
- Vocational assistance
- Job Development
Ending Veteran Homelessness
Veteran Affairs along with the Biden-Harris Administration has a goal set to reduce Veteran homelessness by 25% by 2025. All In: The Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness is how they plan to reach this goal. “A future where no one experiences homelessness, and everyone has a safe, stable, accessible, and affordable home.”
