For Veterans enrolled at University of Maryland College Park –the Department of Veterans Affairs is assuringVeterans that their benefits will be processed under the GI Bill, but they are under a backlog of applications due to the high volume received just before the semester started. The roughly 250 Veterans on campus who receive benefits from the VA are just a small fraction of the nationwide surge in Veteran-student populations, estimated at roughly 170,000. To accommodate for this surge in benefits claims, the VA nearly doubled its staff of benefits processors, from 670 to 1200.
