Starting, November 8, 2022, Veterans who are enrolled in VA healthcare can undergo a toxic exposure screening. These screenings are offered at all VA healthcare facilities across the country.
What can a Veteran expect during the screening?
Toxic exposure screenings can take five to ten minutes. First, the VA employee will ask the Veteran if they believe they experienced any toxic exposure during their time in service. If the Veteran answers yes, they will be asked additional questions about the specific exposures. These include open burn pits, Gulf- War-related exposures, Agent orange, radiation, Camp Lejeune water contamination, and other exposures.
What happens after toxic exposure screenings?
A Veteran is offered a toxic exposure screening once every five years. VA will then connect the Veteran with resources based on what was discussed during the screening. “These screenings are an important step toward making sure that all toxic-exposed Veterans get the care and benefits they deserve,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. “At the end of the day, these screenings will improve health outcomes for Veterans — and there’s nothing more important than that.”
What if the Veteran wants an appointment just for a toxic exposure screening?
The Veteran can contact their local VA facility and ask to be screened by the toxic exposure screening navigator.
