The End Veteran Hunger Act

End Veteran Hunger

The new End Veteran Hunger Act would allow a five-year pilot program that would offer 50 million in grants to connect Veterans in need to a federal program like the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP).

Who is eligible to apply for the grant?

This Act would go into play in 2023 and run through 2027. The program is organized to reach the community level of organizations that help feed the hungry. Veteran Service Organizations, Tribal Organizations, and local, state, or federal government agencies would be among the eligible to apply for the grants.

Food insecurity in Veteran homes

The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that one in ten working-age Veterans lived in an insecure food home in 2019. Previous research on the socioeconomic and health effects of military service can play a role in Veteran homes. Military service can affect one’s physical and mental abilities after serving. These effects can make it difficult to support themselves and their family if they can not find a job. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs has disability compensation that is organized to aid Veterans with life after service if they were injured during service that affects them post service.

Disabled Veterans can receive SNAP benefits along with monthly disability compensation from VA. Under the rules of SNAP, a Veterans disability compensation is factored into the Veteran’s SNAP unit’s income when determining eligibility for a program. The benefits are based on net and gross income.
