On November 11, Veterans Day, Harris County officially announced the establishment of a six-month pilot program, the first such special veterans’ court program in Texas.
Veterans who were honorably discharged or are current members (active or reserve) of the armed forces and are charged with any misdemeanor or felony offense will be eligible for the program. They will be provided an individual treatment plan to address their mental health and/or substance abuse issues that contributed to their criminal offenses.
The Michael E. DeBakey VAMC will provide a special Jail Diversion Team as part of the court program. The team will consist of a court liaison, forensic psychiatrist, and 2 case managers. The team will follow the participants and provide periodic reports to the court. The court’s goal is to reduce recidivism, improve public safety, and enhance the veterans’ quality of life.
