Secretary Shinseki Pledges to Focus on VA Claim Backlog

While visiting a VA facility in Chillicothe, Ohio, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki stated that one of his top priorities this year is to resolve the backlog of disability claims in the VA disability compensation system.  Secretary Shinseki, himself a Vietnam veteran, stated that he particularly wants to focus on veterans of this era still locked up in the adjudication process.  While expressing his desire to reduce the backlog of claims, he also acknowledged that his decision to add B-cell leukemias, Parkinson’s diseases, and ischemic heart disease to the list of illnesses presumed to be related to Agent Orange exposure would increase the number of claims.
