Practical Solutions Can Solve VA Claims Nightmare

Texas Newspaper Publishes Bergmann & Moore Op-Ed and Editorial

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, the Austin American-Statesman printed an opinion piece written by our partners here at Bergmann & Moore, attorneys Glenn R. Bergmann and Joseph R. Moore.

Their article focuses on the causes of VA’s claim delay and error crisis, and it provides several ideas for resolving the problems plaguing the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The printed version of the op-ed is headlined, “Practical Solutions Can Solve VA Claims Nightmare,” and the on-line version is titled, “Bergmann and Moore: Practical solutions for an ailing VA.”

In addition, on May 3, 2013, the Statesman’s editorial board wrote a separate editorial, “VA Fix Requires More than Promises,” highly critical of VA’s handing out bonuses during a time of poor performance by the agency.

Some VBA employees do deserve bonuses based on individual performance.  However, VBA’s large bonuses of $100,000 each to a few bad apples over a period of a few years represents a tragic combination of failure and hubris.  VBA should instead focus on training and quality claim decisions, especially for unemployable veterans where their claims have languished at VA for years.
