Ground was broken for a new Arkansas State Veteran’s Cemetery in Cross County, AK on Wednesday, marking the beginning of the first Veteran’s cemetery to the eastern part of the state. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe was in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony. Speakers at the ceremony expressed their hope that the new cemetery will become a lasting memorial to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Veterans in attendance at the ceremony expressed their appreciation for the new resting place. Vernon Bynum, a Vietnam-era Veteran, said that “through this cemetery we know that [Veterans] have a place of rest for a long, long time.”
Governor Beebe assured Veterans and their families that the cemetery site has enough room to expand when needed and that it is expected that the cemetery will open in about a year.
