Robert “Bob” Maxwell certainly stood out in the crowd. On June 4, 2011, Oregon’s only living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor and most decorated Veteran in the State’s history donned a cap and gown to walk across the stage with Bend High School’s Class of 2011 to finally receive his high school diploma.
Maxwell, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving the rest of his platoon when he threw himself on a grenade in France, received his GED some time ago and even taught at the high school in the 1950’s. “In some ways, I feel like it’s a diploma that I haven’t earned,” Maxwell said. “But then I look back over the 73 years behind me, and I guess I have accumulated enough knowledge and skills to say that I’ve earned it.”
