Increased Ratings – VA Disability Compensation

Once a Veteran’s claim for service connection is granted, VA will assign a disability rating based on the severity of their condition. This rating will establish the tax-free monetary payment the Veteran will receive each month. If a Veteran is not satisfied with the rating VA has assigned, they can appeal the decision within one year of the date on the Rating Decision.

A Veteran can also file for an increased rating for a service-connected condition if the disability has worsened since the original rating was established.

For example:

  • A Veteran was granted service connection for PTSD and assigned a 30 percent rating in 2010.
  • The Veteran experiences worsening symptoms over the next few years and files for an increased rating in 2015.
  • VA concludes that due to the Veteran’s worsening symptoms, a higher rating for PTSD is warranted and increases the Veteran’s PTSD rating from 30 percent to 50 percent.

Filing for an increased rating does not guarantee that VA will award one. Bergmann & Moore has been successful in winning claims for increased ratings.

If you’ve received an unfavorable decision from VA, Bergmann & Moore may be able to help.
