Best Places for Military Retirees

USAA and Military.com recently teamed up with Sperling’s BestPlaces to study the best metropolitan areas for military retirees.  The review included general livability factors – such as climate, health care, crime levels, school performance, leisure activities, transportation – and also factors of particular importance to veterans, including proximity to military facilities and amenities, VA medical services, tax policies affecting military pensions, higher education resources, unemployment rate, cost of living, and the affordability of the housing market.  The study was conducted because these groups recognized the unique challenges faced by military retirees in choosing where to live after their service.  Unlike civilians, military retirees have spent their adult lives living wherever the government has sent them at the government’s expense.  Averaging in their 40s, military retirees often need to begin a second career, as their pension averages only half of their pay and they may have families for whom they need to provide.  Many times, these retirees realize that their military occupation does not translate directly to civilian employment, and they need resources for additional training and/or education.  While San Diego and Honolulu are popular places for military retirees, they were not included in the list because of their high cost of living.  The review concluded that the top ten places for military retirees are:

  1. Waco, TX
  2. Oklahoma City, OK
  3. Austin-Round Rock, TX
  4. College Station-Bryan, TX
  5. Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA
  6. San Angelo, TX
  7. Madison, WI
  8. Pittsburgh, PA
  9. New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner, LA
  10. Syracuse, NY
