The House and Senate conducted a joint hearing on Thursday to receive a detailed presentation from The American Legion that analyzed VA’s ability to serve millions of Veterans. More than 100 Legionnaires and family members were in attendance. The American Legion analysis identified education and employment as major issues facing Veterans, and encouraged lawmakers to increase oversight of government hiring practices and to step up initiatives designed to help Veterans transition into the civilian workforce. The American Legion acknowledged VA’s progress in the last few years, but maintained that more must be done for Veterans at the policy level.
Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Bob Filner, D-CA, was in agreement, acknowledging that “we must continue to work together to provide our Veterans with the quality health care and services that they require and that they have earned.”
