Veterans Crisis Line Successful in Preventing Veteran Suicides

In March 2011, the Department of Veterans Affairs launched the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273- TALK (8255), in response to the extremely high rate of suicide amongst veterans. One statistic demonstrates that every day, 18 veterans commit suicide.

The initiative has been a resounding success, as VA recently reported that the Crisis Line has rescued 16,855 Veterans and active-duty service members. It is also important to note that the Crisis
Line uses the same phone number as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, but to transfer directly to a VA responder, the caller must press 1.
