Posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that can occur after a traumatic event. These are events in which the sufferer believes that their life or the lives of others are in danger. During a traumatic event, sufferers often feel afraid and that they have no control over the situation. Veterans can experience symptoms for months or even years after an event has occurred.
PTSD is more common than you might think
Posttraumatic stress disorder is also referred to as posttraumatic stress or posttraumatic stress syndrome. PTSD is extremely common in veterans who were exposed to combat during their service. Occasionally, PTSD manifests itself as other mental conditions such as depression or anxiety.
In addition to trauma from combat, an equal percentage of both men and women veterans report experiencing sexual trauma while serving in the military. Many of these veterans develop PTSD as a result of both the trauma and the retaliation they suffer if they report the event.
Symptoms of PTSD include:
- Re-living the trauma through nightmares, flashbacks or disruptive recollections of the event
- Emotional detachment and avoidance of places, people and activities that are reminders of the event
- Increased state of arousal including difficulty sleeping and concentrating, feeling jumpy and being easily angered or irritated
Many veterans that experience symptoms of PTSD have difficulty functioning in an occupational environment. Unlike other anxiety disorders, PTSD can occur months or even years after a traumatic event has occurred.
If you feel that you might be suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder, it’s important that you get help. Although symptoms of PTSD seldom disappear, treatment can help sufferers learn to cope more effectively.
